Getting Started

Taking the first step is the hardest part of any fitness journey. The decisions you will make are life changing. The way you eat and spend your free time will be different. You will see yourself go places that you never imagined.

The biggest stressor on a healthy life style is usually time. Not having the time to cook your own meals, go grocery shopping or go to the gym leads most people to have unhealthy habits.

Once we begin to realize what changes we need to make to be successful, we can then start to plan ahead and make the most of our time.

Below I will outline some steps you can take to observe your personal situation and begin to make healthy changes in your life.

⁃ IDENTIFY YOUR VICES: when we take a look at our daily life there are usually obvious decisions we’re making that aren’t part of a healthy life style. A good way to identify these choices in our diet is to begin tracking our food and drink intake. A lot of times you’ll notice right away that the latte you have with breakfast accounts for a quarter of your daily calories. Cutting out obviously bad choices can be a relatively simple way to start a diet.

⁃ MAKE A CHANGE: the first change we make will be an individual decision. You should choose to make effective and tolerable changes to begin the process. Jumping in too deep can lead to shock, although it CAN lead to the fastest progress. For example, cutting your pasta serving with dinner in half and not having a soda every day can be a huge change for most people.

⁃ BE CONSISTENT: A change will only be effective if it is permanent. Sadly cutting out soda for a week while not get you to any serious goals. To make real life long differences in behavior you will have to turn changes into habits. Believe me, when you consistently do something you’ll be shocked how easy it can become.

⁃ REALIZE PROGRESS: A big part of any health journey is measuring progress. I know this often means weighing yourself every morning and tracking your body weight. Obviously if we’re talking about losing weight this is a very good way to track progress. But a change you made last week may have you feeling happier and more energetic each day. Take note of these changes also, your mental health is just as important as your physical health .

Getting started is challenging. Just remember that challenge is important part of process. The more consistent you are, the easier it’ll get and the more successful you will be.
